Prof. Alice Collett

Director

Alice Collett is an academic who, through her career, has worked at several universities around the world—in North America, Europe and Asia. She was previously Dean at Nalanda University, in India, as was, it seems, the great fifth century Indian astronomer and mathematician Āryabhata (although in a different department!).

Alice is a specialist in ancient Indian religious history, and most of her work to date concentrates on women in early South Asia. She has published over twenty journal articles and book chapters on the topic, as well as several full-length volumes. Her first edited volume is entitled Women in Early Indian Buddhism: Comparative Textual Studies (2013) and her first monograph, Lives of Early Buddhist Nuns: Biographies as History (2016). Her most recent book is I Hear Her Words: An Introduction to Women in Buddhism (2021). As well as being Director of The South Asia History Project, Alice has recently worked as a consultant for BBC Bitesize, with Sahapedia-UNESCO in India and is General Editor of Buddhist Studies Review. She also serves on the university’s International Committee.

Rishi Srinivasan

Project Officer

I am a graduate of the University of St. Andrews MLitt Program in Global, Social, and Political Thought.  I took modules on South Asian history, philosophy, and political science.  My final dissertation was a decolonial critique of America’s recent wars, with particular emphasis on the conflicts in Afghanistan and Pakistan.  I am also a graduate of the University of Dundee Arts and Humanities MFA program, where my final degree show was a series of screen prints based on Indian iconography.  I received my B.A. in History and my teaching credential from the University of California, Los Angeles.

I have over five years of formal teaching experience split between my home state of California, USA, and Dundee, Scotland. I strive to have a student-centered, culturally responsive teaching practice based on love and compassion. I look forward to working with you.
